The course content centers on self-determination theory (SDT), its history, foundations, and applications to education in general, and to school leadership and teaching specifically. SDT is a meta-theory of motivation that concerns humans' innate tendency of growth by meeting the basic human needs of autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Social factors can either support or thwart these needs, which are associated with quality motivation and well-being. Participants will gain an understanding of the development of the theory through three modules, including 1) Background on SDT, 2) SDT and Leadership, and 3) SDT in the Classroom. In addition to the framework of SDT, participants will explore the concept of virtuous motivation and how autonomy-supportive techniques can enhance work and school culture.
